{"id":3093,"date":"2018-06-16T18:01:16","date_gmt":"2018-06-16T18:01:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.wordpress.com\/?p=3093"},"modified":"2021-08-14T15:50:43","modified_gmt":"2021-08-14T22:50:43","slug":"trains-and-many-train-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/2018\/06\/16\/trains-and-many-train-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"Trains and (many) train songs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Update 29 August 2019:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve recently read a <em><strong>fascinating<\/strong><\/em> book that is relevant to this blog. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393333612\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0393333612&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=lareinedumond-20&amp;linkId=15972f2629bb25cf00fb27caf6154539\">The Associates: Four Capitalists Who Created California<\/a> tells about the making of the railroad and how it shaped the state of California. The Associates were  Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins; the book focuses on Huntington, but it does a good job of describing the others too. Crooks, the lot of them, but brilliant., and they certainly did determine the fate of much of California. In the meantime, a fun blog on trains and <em>many<\/em> train songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">See my blog on <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/horse-songs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Many <strong>HORSE <\/strong>songs<\/a>! (Yeah, there&#8217;s a reason for that; I&#8217;ll probably have those best-of-train-songs here too). So here is my list of 100 and counting; and to be clear, for me a train song is any that mentions a train, even if&#8211;or especially if-it&#8217;s not really about trains. Most train songs aren&#8217;t really about trains&#8230; Often <em>train<\/em> songs aren&#8217;t about trains at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A little background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I had been trying to share a song a day with someone for a week or so when I started this blog, and that&#8217;s easier to do if you&#8217;ve got a theme.&nbsp; I tried to do morning, but it just wasn&#8217;t working for me. Then I thought about doing a rain theme (and might do that next), but I&#8217;m not in the mood at the present for the melancholy of&nbsp;<em>rain<\/em> songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many days ago now, I decided&nbsp;<strong>trains<\/strong> were more fun than mornings.&nbsp;Trains&nbsp;<em>always&nbsp;<\/em>work for me,&nbsp;<strong>especially<\/strong> when I&#8217;d really like to be going somewhere.<br><br>There are many train songs here.&nbsp; At first, I  simply listed them.&nbsp; At the bottom of the list, I include some that were shared with me.&nbsp; Finally, there are several categories: Blues, Train Wreck Songs, Railroad working songs (gandy dancer songs), Children&#8217;s songs, and foreign language train songs (mainly Spanish, a few French).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like to tell me your favorite song, or make a suggestion after having a look at my list, please complete this google poll:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdNpaMnt0TZpT_IzYjX47_aqZzJIF8fSUPAddqjahe3McSECA\/viewform?embedded=true\" width=\"670\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\">Loading\u2026<\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most of these songs can be found on my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL9B2dVMNzOd-2mE2h_1_89CADrQWyDsTT\">Youtube playlist<\/a>. He said, &#8220;Mom, they still play this at high school dances. And everyone sings at the tops of their voices.&#8221;&nbsp; Well, good songs never die, and I had my song for Day 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1k8craCGpgs\">Don&#8217;t Stop Believing<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I debated between two Chris de Burgh songs for Day 3, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vj9Pakd384k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Borderline<\/a> and the winner,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Spanish Train:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"nv-iframe-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chris De Burgh - Spanish Train\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DnaUvPoiTfQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By this time, I had sat down to work on my dissertation defense powerpoint (and was therefore in need of&#8230; a good procrastination device).&nbsp; I had planned a week&#8217;s worth of songs, and had about dozen more listed. when I thought, hmm, what am I missing, maybe I will ask for suggestions on Facebook.<br>Wow do people like train songs.&nbsp; It took me till (ahem, nearly midnight) to listen to all of the suggestions not already on my list (or on my list, but different covers). The Stranger Song:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>[kad_youtube url=&#8221;www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ynSu15-r-NE&#8221; width=560 height=315 ]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ynSu15-r-NE\"><strong>Tower of Song<\/strong><\/a> so much more (depressing as it is), even if, as a friend said, you have to squint to see the train in it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On day 6, I defended my dissertation, so <em>of course<\/em> it had to be Leaving Winslow (which is from a&nbsp;<strong>great<\/strong> album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Standing-Breach-Jackson-Browne\/dp\/B00LSWU1A8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Standing in the Breach)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DIhVCrQaKHQ\">Leaving Winslow<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I then proceeded to listen to Leaving Winslow repeatedly over the next several days; I know every word and every chord now. As soon as I get bored or feel trapped wherever I am, there&#8217;s nothing I want more than to board a train (although a jet is an acceptable substitute, as would be a ship, there&#8217;s nothing quite like a train, its sound and feel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div>Day 7, tangentially following, was this one. I had forgotten it, but luckily my call for songs on Facebook was heard by someone who had not.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NRtvqT_wMeY\">Runaway Train<\/a> (Soul Asylum)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div>&nbsp;Day 8 was an old favorite, Homeward Bound. I&#8217;ve spent most of my life far from where I grew up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, yet somehow, Springville is still home.&nbsp; Every time I&#8217;ve heard this song over the years (and so often, when I&#8217;ve seen a jet fly across a blue sky) it&#8217;s never failed to make me want to go home.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. My life would be easier if distances could be traversed as quickly&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Ueivjr3f8xg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I.G.Y.<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Day 10 is a change of mood \ud83d\ude09 the perfect country and western song, aka<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jkKn5HrKgHQ\">You Never Even Called Me by My Name<\/a>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And just to keep switching things up, Day 11 is the great<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. I love travelling by train, and have my share of stories, but one of the saddest moments in my <em>young<\/em> life was standing on the platform at the station in Palencia, Spain, waiting for the Madrid train, summer 1989. (<a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/about\/\">About me<\/a>.)
