I was reminded of it when a student asked me for reading recommendations yesterday. I&#8217;ll post it now, and then add as more fiction and nonfiction books about psychology come across my radar. Most of the books below describe the experiences of persons with mental disorders, some true stories, some based on true stories, some pure fiction (or so the authors claim). There is also a decent <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/36QdVmc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kahneman&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/34H2DhH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thinking, Fast and Slow<\/a> is a book about judgment and decision-making built on years of research in psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/34EqnmE\">Girl, Interrupted<\/a> is a memoir by Susanna Kaysen about her experiences with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/borderline-personality-disorder\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>. There is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3delLXY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/36TYJEW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Art of Misdiagnosis: Surviving My Mother&#8217;s Suicide<\/a> is a memoir by Gayle Brandeis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3swHJLU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures<\/a> is a fantastic book that takes place in the Central Valley (Fresno).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#5c00a3\">Fiction (for the most part)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/34Jb5gj\" target=\"_blank\">The Bell Jar<\/a> is a semi-autobiographical classic by Sylvia Plath that reflects her own descent into depression (bipolar?). Plath committed suicide not long after it was published.<br>(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/suicidepreventionlifeline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Suicide Prevention Lifeline<\/a> 1-800-273-8255)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/hours.jpg?resize=191%2C259&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4436\" width=\"191\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/hours.jpg?w=307&amp;ssl=1 307w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/hours.jpg?resize=221%2C300&amp;ssl=1 221w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><figcaption>I loved the book <em>The Hours,<\/em> and the film has a stellar cast.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GJSlFv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turtles all the Way Down<\/a> is a YA novel by John Green about OCD. Really good book and an easy read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3nvWpts\">The Hours<\/a><\/em> is a fantastic novel (won the Pulitzer Prize) about Virginia Woolf and her characters that tells the story of three women whose lives are interlinked, and torn by depression and despair. There is also a good <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3lyArEt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movie<\/a> with Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there is Woolf&#8217;s famous classic, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/34Q9Yvw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mrs. Dalloway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3nzoVua\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night<\/a> is a novel about a boy with autism spectrum disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3dgIS49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Girl on the Train<\/a> is a thriller that includes gaslighting and substance abuse. It too has been  made into a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2SE1Bxn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/375eQzF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Flew over the Cuckoo&#8217;s Nest<\/a> is a classic about life in a psychiatric institution. <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3lzkcXS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The movie<\/a> (Jack Nicholson) is great too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Naturals (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GYRRec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link to book 1<\/a>) is a YA series that delves into the minds of serial killers. Written by a research psychologist, the books follow a team of teenagers who help profile and track down villains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3soRAUd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Atlantis Complex<\/a> is the seventh book in the Artemis Fowl middle grade (I think) series about elves and humans&#8230; fantasy, with an increasingly dark twist as the series progresses. Fairies too have a diagnostic manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-virtue-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Books on my to-read list<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#5c00a3\">Fiction (for the most part)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3nKvCKj\" target=\"_blank\">The Art of Starving<\/a> is told by a gay teen suffering from an eating disorder; this purportedly excellent YA novel is on my reading list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3dhoO1L\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thirteen Reasons Why<\/a> also has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80117470?source=35\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Netflix series<\/a> I want to watch&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#5c00a3\">Nonfiction (for the most part)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/36ThsAb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This is your Brain on Food<\/a> provides interesting information about how diet can affect different mental issues such as PTSD, anxiety, depression&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30Ve2JH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Happiness Hypothesis<\/a>, by psychologist Jon Haidt, combines philosophy and empirical research to address why we are and aren&#8217;t happy. It&#8217;s been on my list since first published, when i bought a signed copy at a conference&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another by Jon Haidt (I&#8217;ve partially read it) is <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3jOMAok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion<\/a> addresses some of the psychology behind political orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3iNYFsy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales<\/a> by Oliver Sacks recounts the stories of his patients suffering various neurological disorders (the man in the title had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/visual-agnosia#:~:text=Visual%20agnosia%20is%20the%20inability,use%20of%20visually%20presented%20objects.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visual agnosia<\/a>). I&#8217;ve read some but not all of these fascinating accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suggested by a student: <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3gxjIC6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma<\/a> by Bessel van der Kolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/lambs.jpg?resize=355%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4435\" width=\"355\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/lambs.jpg?w=443&amp;ssl=1 443w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/lambs.jpg?resize=213%2C300&amp;ssl=1 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><figcaption><em>The Silence of the Lambs<\/em> &#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3lvXGis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3nFy1ph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movie<\/a> &#8212; is about the psychopath Hannibal Lecter <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-virtue-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Films<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/36Oqi2l\" target=\"_blank\">As good as it gets<\/a> (Jack Nicholson, OCD, a classic)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33LOXm9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rainman<\/a> (Dustin Hoffman, autism, another classic)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-virtue-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Resources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/rachelstrolle\/mental-health-awareness-month-books-ya-reading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of YA book<\/a>s featuring characters with mental disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If you have any suggestions, please leave them in a comment!!
