{"id":559,"date":"2015-10-01T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T14:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.wordpress.com\/?p=559"},"modified":"2015-10-01T14:14:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-01T14:14:00","slug":"if-youre-happy-and-you-know-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/everythingelse\/2015\/10\/01\/if-youre-happy-and-you-know-it\/","title":{"rendered":"If you&#039;re happy and you know it&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jtwlMuHPv9M]<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jtwlMuHPv9M?t=1m\">clap you hands<\/a>!<br \/>\nThis song has\u00a0<em>always<\/em> bothered me. \u00a0I felt pressured to\u00a0<em>be<\/em> happy when I was a child, and when I was a teacher, leading a class of young children, I felt like I was pressuring\u00a0<em>them. \u00a0<\/em>Yes, there is an opportunity to express sadness (say boohoo), so it may balance out. \u00a0But who&#8217;s going to NOT clap their hands? \u00a0And if you&#8217;re\u00a0<em>not<\/em> happy, and you\u00a0<em>do<\/em> clap your hands, does that alleviate the unhappiness in any way? (above and beyond what singing may do to help)<br \/>\nHow do you even know if you&#8217;re happy?<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve always preferred to think about happiness in Spanish, because\u00a0<strong><em>felicidad<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;happiness&#8211;is something permanent,\u00a0<em>ser<\/em> and not\u00a0<em>estar. \u00a0<\/em>You cannot be transiently happy in Spanish. \u00a0For transitory happiness, you would say\u00a0<em>estoy contenta,\u00a0<\/em>I am (for the moment) content.<br \/>\nOf course, that seems to downplay the virtue of content, which&#8211;in English anyway&#8211;has a meaning beyond happiness, connotative of acceptance and peace, perhaps more valuable than\u00a0<em>happiness.<\/em><br \/>\nPerhaps it would be better to say &#8220;If you&#8217;re in a good mood and you know it, clap your hands.&#8221; \u00a0If you are in a bad mood, the clapping of the hands might cheer you up. \u00a0It probably won&#8217;t make you\u00a0<em>happy.<\/em><br \/>\nThe real question, the one that inspired me to write this blog, is if posting on Facebook (e.g.) that you are happy makes you happy. \u00a0A few days ago, I commented (admittedly a bit tongue in cheek) on a Facebook post that\u00a0these days practically everything gets its meaning on facebook.<br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/10\/e5a2e-91831279872312791_fsaacos4_c.jpg?resize=560%2C392\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"392\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"ContentZone\"><\/div>\n<p>When asked to explain myself, I replied that it is a philosophical question: &#8220;Do people feel better, really, if they say something like &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t get any better than this&#8221; and post a picture&#8230; does saying this make them happier with their life?&#8221;<br \/>\nBecause rarely are their pictures or descriptions so wonderful that I cannot imagine it\u00a0<em>getting better.<\/em>\u00a0 Of course, I understand that the intent may be to show appreciation to those you are with: your friends (picture of you all in a bar); your children (pictured at a ball game, or camping); your significant other (that special meal).<br \/>\nAt least, part of the intent <em>may<\/em> be the compliment to your real life people&#8230; much of it seems to be to present a shiny image of yourself to your Facebook audience<br \/>\n[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QxVZYiJKl1Y&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Shelly_Farnham\/publication\/220879047_Faceted_identity_faceted_lives_social_and_technical_issues_with_being_yourself_online\/links\/00b4952853f8f67c16000000.pdf\">Some research on the compatibility of different facets of the self online<\/a><br \/>\nI&#8217;m not judging&#8230; We\u00a0<em>all<\/em> present different versions of ourselves to the world, sometimes losing the\u00a0<em>real<\/em> self in the act of self-presentation. \u00a0The value of this would be the subject of another post. \u00a0My question is: To what extent does\u00a0<em>self-presentation<\/em> change the\u00a0<em>self<\/em>?<br \/>\nOf course, there is plenty of research focused on the effects of online networking, I am just unfamiliar with it. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Brittany_Gentile\/publication\/257252764_The_effect_of_social_networking_websites_on_positive_self-views_An_experimental_investigation\/links\/0deec5366fc0f5073b000000.pdf\">Some research<\/a> suggests that online presentation enhances narcissism and\/or self-esteem. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jis.sagepub.com\/content\/39\/1\/101.full\">Other studies <\/a>encourage the belief that, really, people tend to be honest, within the context of trying put their best foot forward. \u00a0(I wonder&#8230; is claiming to dislike dissimulation simply part of the face kept in that jar by the door?)<br \/>\n[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k9Itt02QOO0&amp;w=640&amp;h=480]<br \/>\nBut my hurried lit review has not revealed research investigating the effect of self-presentation on\u00a0<em>happiness,<\/em> or even content. \u00a0(Although <a href=\"http:\/\/eds.a.ebscohost.com\/eds\/pdfviewer\/pdfviewer?sid=2ed95310-1828-4d96-9617-034cf40ee65a%40sessionmgr4003&amp;crlhashurl=login.aspx%253fdirect%253dtrue%2526profile%253dehost%2526scope%253dsite%2526authtype%253dcrawler%2526jrnl%253d10949313%2526AN%253d22677433&amp;hid=4110&amp;vid=0\">this study<\/a>\u00a0suggests that positive feedback from online relationships enhances well-being.)\u00a0Self-esteem, although undoubtedly a component of well-being, is not related to it in a clearly\u00a0<em>necessary<\/em> way&#8230; \u00a0If you tell your facebook friends (and yourself) often enough that life doesn&#8217;t get much better, does this mean you really believe it, or does it mean that you really <em>wished<\/em> you believed it? \u00a0And saying so make it so?<br \/>\nOf course, you can honestly profess the belief that life doesn&#8217;t get much better even if you are\u00a0not <em>happy<\/em>. \u00a0You could be content, and content to be content. \u00a0Or you could simply be accepting that happiness doesn&#8217;t happen, really, not now and not ever. \u00a0More likely, though, people simply want to share a moment of appreciation for what they&#8217;ve got, independently of (the illusion of) happiness.<br \/>\nAnd perhaps expressing that appreciation does lead to greater <del>happiness<\/del> content*. \u00a0It&#8217;s a testable hypothesis.<br \/>\n*I cross out\u00a0<em>happiness\u00a0<\/em>because whatever happiness is, it is not so malleable as to be achieved via virtual enhancement. \u00a0And while happiness is compatible with content (and angst and sorrow for that matter), it is most definitely not a necessary component of content.<br \/>\n&#8220;Happiness is often presented as being very dull but\u00a0[&#8230;]\u00a0that is because dull people are sometimes very happy and intelligent people can and do go around making themselves and everyone else miserable.&#8221; (Hemingway)<br \/>\n[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KSGuBNopzBw&amp;w=640&amp;h=480]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jtwlMuHPv9M] clap you hands!
