{"id":807,"date":"2016-02-14T01:41:39","date_gmt":"2016-02-14T01:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.wordpress.com\/?p=807"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:40:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T16:40:05","slug":"tips-on-using-mturk-with-qualtrics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/tips-on-using-mturk-with-qualtrics\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips on using MTurk with Qualtrics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">I&#8217;ve got to explain to my labmates how to use Amazon.com&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mturk.com\">Mechanical Turk<\/a> to collect data, so I thought I&#8217;d write a blog with some basic tips on using MTurk with Qualtrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#188bbc\">Table of Contents<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#issues\">Potential Issues<\/a><br><a href=\"#on-qualtrics\">Setting up Qualtrics<\/a><br><a href=\"#mturk\">Setting up your Study on MTurk<\/a><br><a href=\"#tips\">Other Tips<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.aws.amazon.com\/AWSMechTurk\/latest\/RequesterUI\/amt-ui.pdf\">MTurk Requester UI Guide<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/112793803393671\/\">Academic MTurk Users Facebook page<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Some time&nbsp;ago, Amazon doubled their fees on HITs with ten or more assignments.. it is 20% for up to nine assignments, and after that 40%. &nbsp;This was disastrous for those of us in academia who have low budgets (and when we&#8217;ve got more money to spend, we often prefer to spend it on in-lab controlled experiments).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Luckily, there are many workarounds if you know a bit of coding,&nbsp;<em>or<\/em> if you know where to find coding. &nbsp;When I first had to deal with this, I had to reference about 20 sites to work it all out. Since then, several people have been kind enough to post instructions. &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1Y_lvecsOefCfkXkkrdFtW1GH-NkoZidKzKXqFVJaLH4\/edit#slide=id.ga3bec7adb_0_57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This<\/a> is a particularly clear explanation covering how to avoid that 40% fee (if that&#8217;s all you need, or if you &nbsp;need more detail than I provide, I recommend you go to that <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1Y_lvecsOefCfkXkkrdFtW1GH-NkoZidKzKXqFVJaLH4\/edit#slide=id.ga3bec7adb_0_57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">webpage<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Here, I will provide <strong>general<\/strong> instructions on how to use MTurk, in conjunction with Qualtrics, to collect data. (More posts on Qualtrics: <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/2018\/04\/13\/random-assignment-in-qualtrics\/\">Random Assignment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/2015\/11\/17\/qualtrics-tips\/\">Embedded Data<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/2019\/02\/27\/qualtrics-tips-using-logic\/\">Using Logic<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See my <a href=\"https:\/\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/how-to-set-up-your-survey-to-collect-data-on-mturk-advice-suggestions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post on how to avoid bad data<\/a> when collecting data on MTurk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"issues\">Some issues for which you will need to prepare:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Workers taking your survey more than once: this will violate assumptions of independence, among other things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workers getting the Survey Code from other workers (there are many fora) and simply inputting it on amazon in order to get paid without ever even opening your survey (<strong><em>yes<\/em><\/strong> it happens, even though most mTurk workers are honest).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>You<\/em><\/strong> not allowing enough time.<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">First<\/span>, remember that the MTurk workers must complete your survey, get the code, and input on amazon.<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Second<\/span>, remember that undergrads complete questionnaires at light speed, or at least, in about one quarter to half the amount of time people &#8220;in the real world&#8221; will need. This means not only will you have to allow enough time on the MTurk side, but you will have to pay enough. \u00a0I&#8217;m not going to tell you how much to pay, but if you are paying 25 cents for 5 minutes (a typical amount), that&#8217;s $3\/hr. \u00a0You will get lots of participants if you offer anything over $0.25 in my experience, but you&#8217;re going to piss a lot of people off if they end up spending 10 minutes for $0.25. \u00a0It&#8217;s easy to miscalculate, I&#8217;ve done it&#8230; just keep an eye on timing and adjust payment accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"on-qualtrics\"><strong>On Qualtrics:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert a &#8220;Text Entry&#8221; question at the end of your survey asking for the participants Worker ID (e.g., \u201cPlease enter your MTurk Worker ID.\u201d).<br><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\">You will use this to verify that each worker has in fact completed your survey.<br><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Make sure you specify on the MTurk project that they will need to input their Worker ID.<br>When you are ready to pay your Workers, download the Survey data file on Qualtrics, and use the Worker ID variable to make sure each worker has completed the survey and input his or her ID. \u00a0I copy the ID from MTurk, and use &#8220;Find&#8221; to locate it in the appropriate SPSS or excel column.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up a Custom End of Survey message.\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In \u201cSurvey Options\u2014Survey Termination\u201d select \u201cCustom end of survey message.\u201d<br> <figure><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"755\" height=\"196\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-845 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/qualtrics.png?resize=755%2C196&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"qualtrics\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/qualtrics.png?w=755&amp;ssl=1 755w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/jessicaeblack.org\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/qualtrics.png?resize=300%2C78&amp;ssl=1 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 755px) 100vw, 755px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 755px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 755\/196;\" \/><\/figure><\/figure> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can see that I already have several such messages, one of which is &#8220;MTurk Numeracy.&#8221; They are stored in your Library. \u00a0You can create a new one from here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Use the Custom End of Survey message to give workers a code<\/span> to input on the MTurk side in order to be paid.<br>For example:<br>Thank you! Please use the following code to validate your participation on mTurk:\u00a0&#8220;HappyPuppy8&#8221; **See below for updated advice on codes.**<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-accent-2-color has-text-color\">Assigning unique codes to workers (UPDATE)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">I learned fairly quickly after writing this blog post that you cannot use just one code for workers to input on MTurk (people will input the code without having completed your survey. You should give each worker a unique code. You can do this via Survey Flow (embedded data) and piped text (see images below). Use the drop down menus to select Custom Value &#8211;&gt; Piped Text &#8211;&gt; Random Number. Participants will be randomly assigned a number between 1000000 and 9999999.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">After you set up the Embedded Data, go to the last page in your Survey. Add a Descriptive Text Question with the words &#8220;Your unique code is&#8221; (for example), and then you will need to pipe the number assigned in Survey Flow into the text. Once you do ten or more, the charge goes from 20% to 40%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give them enough time to finish your survey and get back to input the code.***<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the HIT to expire in a reasonable time frame. These are people rated \u201cMaster\u201d at identifying colors or whatever for marketing firms. This ensures you will be charged the 20% fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Make sure it\u2019s charging you 20%!&nbsp; (and not 5% more for Masters because you forgot to deselect &#8220;Masters only,&#8221; or 40% because you did it wrong and are publishing more than 9 assignments per HIT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">***You will of course have to fund your account first!&nbsp; Follow links to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Tips\">Other tips:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check the email you&#8217;ve associated with your MTurk account frequently so that you may resolve problems as they arise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay people if they&#8217;ve done your survey, even if they don&#8217;t make it back to MTurk to put in the code. \u00a0In fact, if there is\u00a0<em>any<\/em> possibility that a person completed your survey, pay him or her.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Answer inquiries immediately, and pay as soon as possible. \u00a0They already earn little money (even if you are generous by MTurk standards), so don&#8217;t make workers wait.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thanks to a worker who took the time to explain how things work from their end, I know that there is a site where requesters are reviewed by workers:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/turkopticon.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Turkopticon<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I advise keeping an eye on it&#8230; I had one worker&#8211;who had not actually DONE the hit, but just seen it criticized on the forum&#8211;complaining about one of my surveys (advertised as taking no more than five minutes for $0.35) because it took over ten minutes. \u00a0However, unless you sat for five minutes on the consent form, it\u00a0<em>couldn&#8217;t<\/em> take that long, because I had set time limits on the tasks. \u00a0I believe they had somehow ended up on another (non Mturk) survey I had running. \u00a0If I had known about the incident, I could have cleared it up earlier. \u00a0As it was, the complainer apologized and offered advice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mostly, workers are good people, but the reason I advise collecting their IDs and cross-checking in your data-file before paying,\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0watching the fora, is that some are not. \u00a0Because when in doubt you\u00a0<strong>must<\/strong> pay, it is better to remain free of doubt as much as possible!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure your Qualtrics survey is free of errors. It would suck to pay 100 workers only to find you have to throw out the data!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amazon does not keep records of your payments for more than 18 months, so if you need receipts to collect grant money, save them from the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-accent-2-color has-text-color\">If you want to collect worker ids automatically&#8230;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the instructions <a href=\"https:\/\/research-it.wharton.upenn.edu\/news\/capture-mturk-workers-ids-qualtrics-survey\/\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do that <strong>before<\/strong> you follow the instructions above for avoiding the 40% fee and ensuring no repeat takers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That&#8217;s about it&#8230; <\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">I&#8217;ve just transferred these posts to this new blog.
